and Child Transgenerational Support Program To Host First Graduation July

Norfolk, Va.- Norfolk
State University's Family and Child Transgenerational Support Program
will honor the first graduates of the Effective Black Parenting Program
at 6 p.m.Thursday, July 27, in the Scott-Dozier Dining Hall on campus.
The graduates, all of Young Terrace Housing Development, participated
in a 15 session training program designed to strengthen families and prevent
drug abuse. The program was sponsored by a grant from the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration and implemented by Norfolk State's
Cross-Disciplinary Workgroup on Substance Abuse and Health Issues, and
the Young Terrace Housing Development.
The keynote speaker will be the Honorable Daun S. Hester. Elected in 1996
to Norfolk City Council, Hester represents Superward 7, the southeastern
portion of the city and the Naval Base Area. She also serves as the coordinator
of student affairs, pupil personnel services for Norfolk Public Schools.
Her accomplishments include being awarded the Vivian C. Mason Meritorious
Award by the Urban League in 1994 and the School Bell Award by Norfolk
Public Schools. She is recognized in Outstanding Young Women in America
and included in Who's Who Among American Universities and Colleges.
A life-long resident of Norfolk, Hester received a bachelor's degree from
Virginia State University and a master's in education and human development
from George Washington University.
