Norfolk State Student Selected for Thurgood
Marshall Scholarship Scholars Leadership Institute.

Norfolk, Va.— Norfolk State University sophomore Jamila Crawford was recently recognized as a participant in the first General Motors Corporation and Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund Leadership Institute.

A biology major in Norfolk State’s School of Science and Technology, Crawford was one of 65 students selected from a nationwide pool of applicants to attend the leadership conference, which was held Dec. 6 in New York.

The General Motors sponsored Institute provided the scholars with professional development instruction in strategic areas such as career planning, organizational management, interpersonal skills and academic development.  The leadership training was customized for the top scholars, whose grade point averages were as follow: undergraduates 3.8; MBA students 3.62; and law students 3.26.

Named in honor of the first African-American to serve as associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund seeks to identify students who exemplify a commitment to academic excellence and provides programmatic and capacity-building support to its 44-member federation of historically black public colleges and universities.
