NSU National Alumni Association Banquet
Featuring Nathan McCall
· December 16
NSU Alumnus Nathan McCall, author of the
bestseller Make Me Wanna Holler and former Washington Post reporter,
will kick off NSU December commencement activities on Saturday, Dec.
16, as the keynote speaker for the annual alumni banquet at 6:30 p.m.

NSU December Commencement
· December 17
Marcia Ann Gillespie, editor-in-chief of
Ms. magazine, will address approximately 360 graduates at Norfolk State
University’s commencement ceremony, scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec.
17 at Joseph G. Echol’s Hall.

Graduation of Paralegal Class
· December 18
Approximately 40 students will graduate
from the Fall 2000 Paralegal certificate program at 7p.m. Monday, Dec.
18 at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, located at 1881 Concert
Drive.

Food Drive for Homeless Veterans Ends
Dec. 18
The NSU Veterans Affairs/Veterans Upward
Bound Office is sponsoring a food drive. Can goods and non-perishable

Math Department Sponsor Retirement
Banquet
· December 20
The Math Department is celebrating the
retirement of Eleanor Jones, professor of mathematics, at 6 p.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 20 at the Harbour Club in downtown Norfolk. Jones, who is
nationally recognized as the 7th woman to receive a Ph. D in mathematics
in the country, is retiring after 35 years of service to Norfolk State.
NSU Closes for the Winter Holidays
Dec. 22
· Norfolk State University will
close at noon on Friday, Dec. 22 in observance of the winter holidays.
The university will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2001 for
employees. Students will return Jan. 16.

NSU Veterans Affairs Office Accepting
Applications for Free College Prep Courses
· The NSU Veterans Upward Bound
Office is now accepting applications from Veterans and Active Duty Personnel
to take free college prep courses in math, English, GED, typing and
computer training, which will begin in January 2001. Evening and
Saturday classes will be available.

UPCOMING EVENTS
New Student Orientation
· January 11
Norfolk State University will host a New
Student Orientation January 11-12, 2001 for prospective students, as
well as for students who are considering transferring to Norfolk State.
Parents also are welcome. Orientation check-in will begin at 8
a.m. in the lobby of L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. Students
will have the opportunity to tour the campus and meet with faculty from
the academic colleges. Representatives from the offices of Admissions,
Financial Aid, Housing, Athletics and Student Services also will be
on hand.

Martin Luther King Community Leaders
Breakfast
· January 15
The Urban League of Hampton Roads will
sponsor the 17th Annual Martin Luther King Community Leaders Breakfast
at 7:30 a.m., Monday, Jan. 15 at Norfolk State University’s Scott Dozier
Dining Hall. Tickets are available for $250 a table; individual
tickets are $20 and student with valid I.D. cost $10.
