Best-selling Author Nathan McCall to Speak at
the NSU Alumni Association Commencement Banquet Dec. 16

Norfolk, Va.--NSU Alumnus Nathan McCall, author of the bestseller Make Me Wanna Holler: A Young Black Man in America and former Washington Post reporter, will speak at Norfolk State University’s Annual Alumni Banquet as part of the December commencement activities.  Sponsored by the Norfolk State University Alumni Association, McCall’s talk will begin at 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, in the Scott-Dozier Dining Hall.  

A native of Portsmouth, McCall began his career in journalism at Norfolk State University where he received a bachelor of arts in journalism in 1981.  Before joining the Washington Post in 1989, he was a reporter for The Virginian-Pilot and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

 In 1995 Makes Me Wanna Holler became a New York Times bestseller and was named Blackboard Book of the Year.  Noted scholar Henry Louis Gates wrote, “Sooner or later every generation must find its voice.  It may be that ours belongs to Nathan McCall, whose memoir is…a stirring tale of transformation.  He is a mesmerizing storyteller.”

McCall resigned from the Washington Post in 1998 to accept an appointment as a visiting lecturer at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He taught introductory news reporting and writing, and African American images in the Media, an elective African-American studies course.

 In addition, McCall is the also the author of What’s Going On, a series of personal essays.  He is currently working on a novel set in Atlanta.

 Other NSU Commencement highlights include Marcia Ann Gillespie, editor-in-chief of Ms. Magazine. She will address approximately 360 graduates at Norfolk State University’s commencement ceremony, scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 17, at Joseph G. Echol’s Hall.
