NSU MUSIC DEPARTMENT PRESENTS GALA CONCERT

Norfolk, Va. --- The Norfolk State University Music Department presents its Eighth Gala Music Concert at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2000 in the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center in honor of Dr. James M. Reeves, Elston Fitzgerald, and Gwendolyn Barnett Taylor.

Reeves, professor emeritus, joined the NSU Music Department as a faculty member in 1974. He served as the department head from 1979 until his retirement in 1984. Fitzgerald, a 1967 graduate of the university's music department, currently serves as the band director at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Va. Taylor received both her bachelor (1977) and master of music degrees from Norfolk State University. She serves as supervisor of music for Portsmouth Public Schools in Portsmouth, Va.

The concert will feature the Norfolk State University Brass Ensemble conducted by Dr. Stephen Carlson, Concert Choir by Terry Butler, Jazz Ensemble by Rogers Brown, Symphonic Wind Ensemble by Dr. O'Neill Sanford, University/Community Chamber Orchestra by Dr. James Herbison, and special guest performers. It is sponsored by the NSU Music Department and Music Alumni, and the Southeastern Virginia Arts Association.
