PROFESSOR CHARLOTTE A. BROWN SELECTED AARP STATE COORDINATOR Norfolk, Va. --- Norfolk State University associate professor of English and foreign languages, Charlotte A. Brown, has been selected to a two-year term as the Virginia state coordinator of grief and loss for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). In this capacity, she also became a member of the state leadership council, which helps to formulate plans for all AARP programs serving the commonwealth's senior citizens. Brown, the first African American woman to serve as state coordinator, has been a member of Norfolk State's faculty for the past 23 years. She is also founding director of the NSU Children's College established 16 years ago. Brown is a member and board member of several local, state, and national professional organizations, and a life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. AARP is the nation's leading organization for people age 50 and older. It serves their needs and interests through information and education, advocacy, and community services, which are provided by a network of local chapters and experienced volunteers throughout the country. AARP Grief and Loss Programs is one of AARP's National Community Service Programs, which also include AARP 55 ALIVE/Mature Driving, AARP Tax-Aide, and the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program. AARP Grief and Loss Programs offers a wide range of benefits, resources, and information to AARP members and their families who have experienced a loss. As an appointed volunteer leader, Brown joined the ranks of a select group of AARP members whose leadership, record of service, and commitment to the goals of the association are outstanding. In making its selection, the interview team expressed its confidence in Brown's ability to continue the tradition of excellent leadership. Her primary responsibilities are to coordinate the state's local grief and loss programs, act as its consultant, obtain monthly and quarterly reports, and provide leadership in the development of an annual education event. Brown, whose state coordinator term will expire in February 2002, said of her appointment, "I am honored to have been selected and to have the opportunity to coordinate the grief and loss programs for the state of Virginia for the next two years." She was married to Dr. Iris G. Brown for 32 years until his passing and has been a widow for eight years. She is the mother of three daughters.
