The Herbert A. Marshall Collection of the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library is located on the first floor of the Library behind the Circulation/Reserve Desk. This is a Special Collection of approximately ten thousand (10,000) items pertaining to African-American history, folklore, and culture.

This collection was named in honor of Dr. Herbert A. Marshall on April 15, 1997. Dr. Marshall was the first librarian at Norfolk State University where during his 42-year tenure, he also served as Head of the Social Science Department, Director of Instruction, Director of Continuing Education, and Assistant Dean of General and Continuing Education. Dr. Marshall has donated many books and materials to the Library on the African-American experience. When he passed on February 16, 2002, he was Professor Emeritus of Continuing Education.

The Herbert A. Marshall Collection, which includes books that may be checked out for five (5) days, will continue to be a valuable resource for students, faculty and scholars in the area of African-American studies.
