OFFICE OF PLANNING AND BUDGET
Assistant Director of Institutional Research
 

POSITION: Norfolk State University is seeking an experienced higher education professional to join the Office of Planning and Budget’s (OPB) Institutional Research function as Assistant Director of Institutional Research. OPB is responsible for the University’s planning, budget, and reporting efforts in coordination with other offices. The office reports directly to the President and provides senior administrators with timely information needed for planning and decision-making. All federal and state reports are coordinated or completed within this office.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director of Institutional Research and Enrollment Management. The Assistant Director will be responsible for collecting, monitoring and analyzing various types of student and faculty data with regard to retention, graduation, peer institutions, enrollment studies by school, department or program, program review, and other issues as needed. The Assistant Director will coordinate data collection, processing and dissemination for annual reports (e.g., IPEDS, SCHEV, AAUP).

Responsibilities will also include oversight of redesigning the OPB website and preparation of the Office Newsletter. Several projects assigned will include other office team members. However, independent completion of various research projects is expected. Completing in-depth related data requests will also be part of on-going functions in response to accreditation and self-study requirements. The position will supervise the research team activities. The Assistant Director will represent the Institutional Research function in meetings and will serve on various campus committees.

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES: A successful candidate must have an in-depth knowledge and usage of various types of statistical research designs and methods including descriptive and inferential statistics. Candidate must demonstrate past abilities to work effectively under strict deadlines, provide leadership to and work within focused teams and write professionally and clearly. Must effectively communicate data and information into concise reports for decision makers; demonstrate an existing broad-based knowledge of higher education, research methods and statistics to support University reporting requirements; possess strong skills in Excel, Access, graphical packages and SPSS (PC); HTML knowledge a plus; a strong, proven knowledge of student information systems (existing Datatel Colleague knowledge a plus; training will be provided).

Additionally, candidates must be able to foster effective working relationships and work cooperatively with other campus administrative units; demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development and active participation in higher education professional organizations; possess strong interpersonal skills, be able to work with various levels of expertise in all facets of work as well as demonstrate excellent organizational skills. Masters Degree required.
