DEAN, SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS
POSITION: Norfolk State University, one of the
largest historically black universities in the nation, is looking for a
Dean of the School of Liberal Arts who will share our university’s mission
and zeal for achieving excellence. NSU’s mission is to prepare students,
many of whom have been underserved, for a rapidly changing global
environment. NSU is committed to the rich tradition of liberal arts
education and is currently involved in a National Endowment for the
Humanities initiative called “Bridging the Gap Between the Humanities and
the Sciences.”
The School of Liberal Arts is a large, diverse school, housing departments
that range from Fine Arts to Army ROTC. It also includes English and
Foreign Languages, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Mass Communications
and Journalism, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. We
are seeking a candidate with a commensurate breadth of learning interests,
as well as depth of scholarship in his or her chosen field.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The dean reports directly to the Vice President
for Academic Affairs. The dean will be responsible for providing
leadership in all aspects of curriculum planning and development, faculty
and staff hiring, development and evaluation, and budget preparation. We
are seeking a visionary leader with a true passion for education.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate must possess the
following: a terminal degree in one of the disciplines of the School of
Liberal Arts; an excellent record in teaching, research, creative
activities, and service to others both within and without academe;
experience in securing grants and fund-raising is also required; proven
experience working on the level of department head or associate dean;
credentials to qualify for the rank of professor in one of the School’s
academic departments; and excellent interpersonal and communication
skills.
SALARY: Salary will be commensurate with experience.
