Director, Dozoretz National Institute for Mathematics & Applied Sciences
POSITION: The School of Science and Technology seeks
applications and nominations for the position, Director, Dozoretz National
Institute for Mathematics and Applied Sciences (DNIMAS). The Institute’s
mission is to address the shortage of minority scientists by producing
highly trained undergraduates who can successfully complete terminal
degrees in the basic and applied sciences. The program provides full
scholarships and other resources to honor students majoring in biology,
chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, and physics.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate for this
position must be a self-directed individual who can work collaboratively
with the academic departments in the school to advance the mission of
the Institute.
Responsibilities include the following: establish liaisons
and develop proposals to increase external funding support for scholarships;
assist department heads with the development of curricula and undergraduate
research activities which promote graduates study; maintain DNIMAS databases
on recruitment, academic performance, retention, internships, and graduate
study and prepare statistical reports; mentor DNIMAS students; teach
and conduct research in a scientific discipline represented at Norfolk
State University; and develop and implement innovative and effective
recruitment programs to attract high school scholars.
QUALIFICATIONS: Essential selection criteria for the
position include the following:
terminal degree in an area of specialization offered by the school;
record of scholarly achievement, service, and commitment to the culture
of inquiry; outstanding interpersonal, oral and written communication
skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with students; prior
teaching experience in a university environment; excellent analytical,
computing, and problem solving skills; strong organizational, time management,
and strategic planning skills; and prior experience working with a University
honors program.
SALARY/RANK: Rank and salary for this 12-month position
are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
