The competition requires participants to design a poster, or write a poem based on any of the following themes:

  • African American civil rights, past and present.
  • Implicit and explicit promises of democracy since Jamestown
  • Artistic expressions of American democracy from minority perspectives
  • Images of African Americans in the media
  • Economic success in America: myths and realities
  • Global imprints of African American culture



Entries will be divided into three categories:

  • Middle
  • High School
  • College

Prizes: Gift certificates, poster displays, theme park tickets and more!

DEMOCRACY: "We have forgotten that it has to be enacted anew in every generation." -- John Dewey

Judges will include artists and teachers from around Hampton Roads.

Awards Ceremony and Reception at
the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk
on February 21, 2007 at 6:00 p.m.
