Poster/Poetry Competition |

| Norfolk State University
partnered with the
Chrysler Museum of Art and
Wal-Mart Inc. in sponsoring
a Poster and Poetry
competition as part of the
Voices from within the Veil
conference. This
competition allowed
students from middle school,
high school, and college to
create posters or poetry that raised the
awareness of
African-American
perspectives on democracy in
America from the beginning
of the Jamestown Settlement
in 1607 until today. |

Twenty-one semi-finalists
were chosen to have their works
displayed at the Chrysler Museum of Art
from February 21 until March 31, 2007.
Winners were announced by the
Honorable Timothy Kaine, Governor of
Virginia, at the Chrysler Museum on
February 21, 2007.
Prizes included
gift certificates, Jamestown Settlement
tours, Busch Gardens tickets and more.

Concert |
| The Virginia Symphony and the Norfolk State University Concert Choir performed in the concert, Voices Unveiled, February 22, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The program featured, among other favorites, selections from Aaron Copeland (The Lincoln Portrait), Adolphus Hailstork (Let a New Earth Arise), and Duke Ellington (Come Sunday). |

| The concert also featured the NSU Spartan Elite Jazz Combo. Our partner, WHRO, simulcast the concert on its radio station, WHRO 90.3 FM. |

This concert also featured actress, producer, and costume designer Daphne Maxwell Reid , along with actor James Avery narrating the concert. This musical showcase of the African -American odyssey in America interwove song, prose, and instrumental pieces into the story of the African-American quest to achieve democracy in America.
