Special report:
Networking
sites present special danger for students
"What many people don't realize is that information
posted online can lead to real world problems. Stalkers
and identity thieves often find their victims online,
parents can check up on what their children are doing,
employers can find unexpected information about job
applicants and authorities can use information to
bolster a case against a suspect."

Virtual Fun with Real-World Consequences
"While these social networking Web sites provide an easy way for
people to remain in touch over great distance, there is a potential
for criminal abuse. The majority of users are oblivious to the fact
that by posting so much personal data, they are placing themselves
at risk. Merely requiring a user to provide an E-mail address is not
an effective screening function as there are innumerable domains
providing free E-mails."

Myspace Safety
TipsCategory: Social Networking
"But even the police agree that the problem isn't
necessarily Myspace, but how people use it. Detective
Jay Barnes of Albuquerque's child exploitation unit
says, "There are people who are out there shopping for
someone to victimize. You put yourself in danger when
you put your information out there, no matter what site
it is. It's just like going into dark places at night."

What you say online could haunt you
"As more and more students turn to websites such as
Facebook and MySpace to chronicle their lives and
socialize with friends, they also are learning that
their words and pictures are reaching way beyond the
peers for whom they were intended. And some, like Guinn,
are paying a price. In the past few months, college,
high school and even middle school students across the
USA have been suspended or expelled, thrown off athletic
teams, passed over for jobs and even arrested based on
their online postings."
