Retool Your School Contest !

Home Depot’s Third annual Retool Your School HBCU Campus Improvement Grant program is now underway. The program gives Historically Black Colleges and Universities a chance to make campus improvements with the help of The Home Depot. The 2012 Retool Your School grants total $185,000. NSU has submitted three project proposals and you can vote on all three using all of your electronic devices. Vote today and every day until April 10. Eminent Scholar to Discuss Gullah/Geechee Culture

 
Dr. J. Herman Blake, University of South Carolina at Charleston eminent scholar, will present “African Americans in the Gullah/ Geechee Culture in Transition,” Fri., Feb. 24, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the New Student Center, Room 138 B. Learn more about the political culture and economic struggles of one of the most resilient groups of African Americans in the country. Hear about their efforts to create the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor and the  Congressional effort to designate the Sea Islands as a National Heritage Area.

Dr. Joseph Lowery,who fought on the frontline during the Civil Rights era, spoke at Norfolk State Tues., Feb. 21. The feisty, fiery and witty Lowery imparted his life lessons to the audience. Inaugural Week Activities

 

 NSU’s Inaugural Week will be held March 12-17 and will include several community events such as the voices concert, a community forum and a gala. The week-long celebration will include Voices Five: Triumph of the Human Spirit, a classical concert performed by the Norfolk State University Concert Choir and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Fri., March 16, 7:30 p.m. at the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center. A community forum, featuring Bill Strickland, president and CEO of Manchester Bidwell Corp. and author of “Making the Impossible Possible,” will take place Sat., March 17, 11 a.m. in the New Student Center. Lastly, the gala will take place Sat., March 17, 7 p.m. at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. As part of the evening, Dr. Tony Atwater has initiated the Outstanding Achievement Award, which will be given to three distinguished individuals for philanthropy, community service and leadership.
