Members of the Press:

The Board of Visitors of Norfolk State University requests that you save the date for the week-long inaugural activities planned for March 12-17. Additionally, plan to attend the Investiture Ceremony of Dr. Tony Atwater as the fifth NSU president on Friday, March 16, 2012 at 10 a.m., Joseph G. Echols Hall.

Web-based media kits will be available for all inauguration activities. Contact Cheryl Bates-Lee, assistant vice president of university relations, at 757.448.8615 for additional information or to request a media interview with Dr. Atwater. This reception will represent the community’s official welcome of Dr. Tony Atwater to the Hampton Roads region.

Featuring the Preview of 30 Americans Exhibit

From Robert Colescott and Jean-Michel Basquiat to Kehinde Wiley and Nina Chanel Abney, the 30 Americans exhibit surveys the most significant artistic contributions of the past three decades. Drawn from the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, this exciting exhibition brings together 75 works by 31 emerging and established African-American artists, who work within a variety of mediums, from painting and sculpture to photography, video and installation.

Lyman Beecher Brooks Library

The Lyman Beecher Brooks Library is a 134,000-square foot campus centerpiece with the latest technological infrastructures and the amenities to further enrich the NSU experience. The Library houses the Harrison B. Wilson Archives on the second floor, which specializes in collecting and preserving original historical records pertaining to the experiences of African-Americans in Virginia; and the African Art Gallery with a collection of over 600 museum-quality art pieces from many different cultures in West Africa.

This elegant evening of celebration and entertainment will feature tributes and toasts in honor of the Inauguration of Dr. Tony Atwater; and is intended to raise funds for scholarships and programs. Individual tickets cost $150 and sponsorships range from $2,500 to $50,000.
