Why does Microsoft Outlook keep asking me for my user name and password?

Typically the username or password is incorrect. Please check the following:

  • Check the Caps Lock key, sometimes it gets turned on which causes your password to be typed in a different case than when you created it.

  • Make sure you are using the correct login name. Typically your user name is the first initial of your first name, middle name, and your full last name

  • For Faculty/Staff, User name
For Student, User name: first initial. middle initial. last name (i.e. j.j.doe)

If you performed the above checks and you still can't log in, contact the OIT Helpdesk 823-8678 and to have your password reset.

When I log in to my computer I receive the error "No Domain Server Available".
What should I do?

Usually 2 things cause this error, the network cable is unplugged, or the computer has an invalid IP address. To resolve this issue you will need to do the following.

First click OK to the error message
Continue until your Windows desktop comes up.
Now you will need to release and renew the IP address.

In Windows 98/95:

Click on Start > Run. A Run dialog box will appear.
In the Open: field type Winipcfg
Click ok. This will open the IP configuration utility.
In the Field Adapter Type use the pull down arrow and chose the Ethernet adapter. (It is usually a 3com, or Intel adapter.)
Click on Release
Click Renew
Click OK.
Reboot and logon as you normally do.

For Windows 2000 users you will need to:

Click on Start > Run. A Run dialog box will come up.
Type cmd into the Open: field.
A window will appear with a flashing cursor. At the cursor type ipconfig /release.
Hit your Enter key.
At the flashing cursor type ipconfig /renew. The computer will now receive an IP address.
Type exit at the flashing cursor. This will close the window.
Reboot and logon as you normally do.
To check the Network cable you must have access to the backside of your computer. At the back of the computer you will see a gray or white cable that is larger than a telephone cable and has a jack on the end that is quite a bit larger than a regular phone jack. (But it looks similar.)

Where this jack plugs into the computer there should be a flashing light next to it, if the light is not flashing or on, then the network adapter is not receiving a signal from the network. To resolve this you will need to unplug and re-plug the cable into the back of the computer and also into the outlet at the wall.

If the light does not come on, and you cannot log onto the network then call the OIT Help desk at extension 8678.
