Enhancement of Research and Infrastructure in Support of the New Ph.D. Program
in MS&E at NSU
National Science Foundation
Award # HRD-0734846
Period September 1 ,
2007 to August 31, 2009
Overview
The HBCU-RISE project at Norfolk State University plays an important role in the
development of the newly implemented Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering
program.
Under RISE, the Center for Materials Research broadens its capacity by
attracting the participation of junior faculty, in a multidisciplinary effort,
and expanding the Center’s research expertise to biomaterials.
The enhancement of Norfolk State University’s resources in new frontier areas in
materials science and engineering will make the CMR competitive among
institutions conducting research in nanomaterials for biomedical applications.
The research is built around three key infrastructure elements:
- Development and enhancement of capability to fabricate biocompatible rare
earth-doped luminescent nanophosphors for biomedical applications.
- Enhancement of research capability to fabricate and characterize magnetic
nanoparticles for biomedical applications.
- Enhancement of research capability in micro- and opto-electronics.

Goals of this RISE Project
This project will provide
- Equipment to enhance research capabilities.
- Resources for development of junior investigators.
- Foundation for broader interdisciplinary research.
- Greater research opportunities for a diverse population.
This project will leave a legacy
- Model for the development of junior teaching and research faculty.
- Model for expansion of STEM departments at NSU and other Minority Serving
Institutions.
- Establishment of the Center for Development of Nanostructured
Materials.
