A report was given by Chastity Corbett, who attended the C.S.G.C.
conference in Charlotte, NC. Ideas used from her report concerning the
status of other graduate schools were used to spawn ideas concerning
methods to be used to improve student life for graduate students at
Norfolk State University.
Budget and Fundraising: It was brought to the committee’s attention that
there is a need for fundraising in order to expand the budget to allow for
activities such as travel to various national conferences. Primarily, GSA
will receive money from membership dues, which have been set at $10. This
money will eventually enable GSA to join a national graduate student
association.
First Fridays: GSA’s first fundraising project will be First Fridays,
which is slated for May 7. The First Fridays event will be a chance for
students to network with one another as well as business owners who will
set up vending booths at the event. The money obtained from the ticket
sales and the vendor rental fees will be used to fund projects for GSA.
Currently the event is in the preliminary planning stages with individual
members assigned to responsibilities such as venue selection, advertising
opportunities and securing the proper paperwork to open a bank account as
a nonprofit student organization of Norfolk State University.
The committee members of GSA discussed planning a resume workshop for
graduating students who are interested in perfecting their resume. The
workshop would be planned with career services in order to bring in
professionals to critique resumes. The workshop is scheduled for April 13,
2004 at 12:30 p.m.
GSA also discussed ideas for charitable activities including a Back to
School supplies drive for underprivileged children and working in
conjunction with Edmark, an organization that works with grieving families
who have lost young children.
GSA members discussed the possibility of starting a
petition to remove valences from the graduate student grading system.
After researching other graduate school grading policies, it was
discovered the valences are not widely used. This issue is set to be
presented at the Council meeting on March 15.
