Contributions to Norfolk State University are accepted through the Norfolk State University Foundation,
Inc., a non-profit fundraising corporation established to support quality education and to generate private financial support for the academic development of the University. The Foundation is governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors, whose members serve as advocates for the University and its programs.
Some examples of how private giving has impacted NSU include a recent commitment of $100,000 from an alumnus in order to establish
a scholarship to benefit engineering students. This new scholarship will positively impact the lives of many aspiring engineers who will one day contribute to communities around the world. NSU has also received a $500,000 commitment toward an endowed professorship in the School of Business that will help attract and retain the highest caliber faculty members to teach our future business leaders.
The major giving areas for NSU are the Annual Fund, Major Gifts, and
Planned
Giving. Annual Fund gifts are extremely important because they provide continuous support to NSU. Alumni, faculty and staff, parents, and friends of NSU are asked to make their financial commitment each year through mailings or phone calls. For more information on the Annual Fund, please
see Annual Giving.

Major Gifts often provide the funding foundation for new academic programs or buildings that truly enrich the student learning experience. For additional information, see Major Gifts.
Planned Giving is another important component of charitable giving to NSU. There are many different aspects and benefits to planned giving (or deferred giving). For additional information, please see
Planned Giving.
You may designate your gift to a specific fund. Gifts can be designated to a specific area of the University. As a donor, you have the choice of directing your support to any of NSU’s schools, scholarships, academic programs, or student support programs.
If you would like to establish a new scholarship fund, the Development department can assist you in developing a fund that will maximize the benefit of the scholarship.
Please call the office at 757-823-8323 to learn more about these
scholarships or other giving opportunities, or e-mail us at
development@nsu.edu.

All gifts to NSU are sincerely appreciated, but unrestricted giving (giving that is not designated to any specific area or program of the University) is especially important because it allows funds to be applied to the areas that have the greatest and most critical need. Unrestricted gifts are often applied to student financial aid, faculty support, building renovations, new academic programs, and equipment purchases. These gifts allow NSU to manage unexpected expenses or take advantage of new opportunities.
You may designate gifts in honor of or in memory of someone. A gift in memory or in honor of a relative or a friend is a generous and thoughtful way to recognize a person’s life and accomplishments. When an
hoerednor or memorial gift is made, the Foundation will notify the honoree or next of kin, and the gift is
administ as the contributor specifies.

Matching gifts are very beneficial to Norfolk State University. Many individuals may double or triple their gift if they work for one of over 1,500 companies offering a “Matching Gift” program. Some companies will match the gift of a spouse or retired employee.
If you would like to find out whether your company matches your gifts, please
see employer match and do a search on your company’s name. Your human resources department or personnel office is an excellent source for more information about your company's matching gift policies and procedures.
Your gift can be anonymous if you choose. While NSU enjoys publicly recognizing the generosity of its donors, you may always opt to remain anonymous. If you are returning a pledge or gift card, please check the indicated box. If you are mailing a gift with no accompanying card, please indicate that the gift should be anonymous on your check or enclosed letter.
