 Types of Financial Aid & Eligibility

 

Financial Aid award types include both federal, state, and school aid programs. The awards listed below are those offered at NSU to eligible students. Students should be mindful that the university can only award students up to the allotted amount of grant, scholarship/fellowship, and work-study funds.


Grants

Pell Grant Awarded to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree and are enrolled in at least one credit hour. Recipients must be a US citizen or eligible non-resident. up to $5550
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) Recipients must be Pell Grant eligible and have exceptional financial need. $100-$4000
Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Recipients must be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate or graduate student and taking coursework necessary to begin a career in teaching. Recipients must sign a TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve. Up to $4000
College Scholarship Assistance Program (CSAP) Recipients must be a Virginia resident, enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program, and demonstrate exceptional financial need. $400-$5000
Virginia Commonwealth Award Recipients must be a Virginia resident, enrolled at least half-time in an undergraduate degree-seeking program, and demonstrate financial need. Not to exceed $5225
Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP) Recipients must be a Virginia resident, and graduate of a Virginia high school, classified as a dependent student, enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking undergraduate program, demonstrate financial need, and have at least a 2.5 cumulative high school GPA. Renewing students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA. Not to exceed $6532
Graduate Fellowship Recipients must be a full-time degree-seeking graduate student with financial need and/or academic merit. Continuing students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Up to cost of tuition

Work-Study

Federal Work-Study Recipients must be US citizens or permanent residents, enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program, and have financial need. $500 - $4500
NSU Student Employment Program Recipients must be enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program. $500-$4500

Loans

Federal Perkins Loan Recipients must be US citizens or permanent residents, enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program, and have financial need. $500-$4000 (Undergraduate)

$500 - $6000 (Graduate)

William D. Ford Direct Student Loan (Subsidized) Recipients must be US citizens or permanent residents, enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program, and have financial need. $3500 (Freshmen)

$4500 (Sophomore)

$5500 (Juniors & Seniors)

$8500 (Graduate students)

William D. Ford Direct Student Loan (Unsubsidized) Recipients must be US citizens or permanent residents, enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program, and have financial need. Dependent students can qualify for this additional loan if the parent/guardian is denied for a PLUS loan and verification of the denial is provided to the Financial Aid Office. $4000 (Freshmen & Sophomores)

$5000 (Juniors & Seniors)

$12,000 (Graduate students)

PLUS Loan Borrower must be the parent of a dependent undergraduate student. Up to cost of attendance
Alternative/Private Loans Borrower is the student. A co-signer may be required by the lending agency. Up to cost of attendance
Graduate PLUS Loan Borrower must be a graduate/professional student, enrolled at least half-time in a degree-seeking program. Up to cost of attendance
