Applying for Financial Aid
Norfolk State University's Federal
School Code: 003765
NSU uses the calculated results from the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to award financial aid, so students who wish to receive financial aid should complete this application. Students are highly encouraged to complete the application online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov .
However, the student may still mail the completed paper application, which can be obtained from any high school, public library, or college. The application and assistance with completing it are FREE. Be sure to have all of the necessary documents, i.e. federal income tax returns from the prior year, recent bank statements, etc., available when completing the application.
FAFSA
The FAFSA requires a student and parent signature (dependent students) in order to be processed. The FAFSA can be signed in three ways:
-
electronically with a PIN;
- by printing, signing, and mailing a signature page after you submit an application;
- by signing your Student Aid Report (SAR) and returning it by mail.
If you are a dependent student, your parent(s) may also electronically sign your FAFSA using their PIN. If they do not currently have a PIN, they can apply for a PIN by going to Federal Student Aid's PIN Web site at
www.pin.ed.gov
and select 'Apply for a PIN'.
Timing is important!
Completing the financial aid application process is vital in ensuring that the student is considered for all forms of financial aid. Students are awarded based on their eligibility and the availability of funds at the time of awarding. Although a student may have eligibility to receive certain aid types, these monies may be depleted by the time the awarding process takes place.
Accuracy is crucial, as correcting financial aid application information delays the awarding process. It is wise to have all
necessary documents in your possession prior to completing the application to alleviate errors and incomplete information.
