Department of Engineering

Mr. Walter N. Odom,
Director of Recruiting and Retention

With experiences at four distinctively different institutions, Winston-Salem State University, Texas A&M University, and the University of Tennessee and now Norfolk State University, Walter Odom has  a twenty-seven year proven track record of solid results in student support services, program operations, employer relationship building, faculty-campus relations, and fiscal accountability. Many of Mr. Odom’s achievements can be attributed to strong peer/colleague support, rapport with  students, and outstanding cooperation from regional, national, and international corporate partners.

As an administrator, Mr. Odom’s leadership and organizational skills have proven successful as he has demonstrated dependability with a display of strong core values. In addition to interpersonal and leadership skills, Mr. Odom is committed to utilization of technology/computerization. At the University of Tennessee under his leadership, the program went from stand-alone computers to a networked system. This operation is now web-based and provides connectivity for students, faculty, and corporate partners worldwide. Mr. Odom has also had much success in garnering donations through corporate and alumni relations.

Presently as Director of Recruitment and Retention for Engineering in the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, Mr. Odom is developing a long-range strategy for continued growth and excellence that meshes with the organizational goals and objectives.

Mr. Odom’s high esteem for education and continuous learning has led him to attend additional training through Dale Carnegie’s “Communications and Human Relations” seminar; and, for eight years the University of Tennessee’s Leadership Institute.  He became a Trainer for both of these programs.  Mr. Odom is also a sought after speaker and moderator in the areas of corporate development and diversity in the workplace.  As a member of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Co-Op Division, Odom has held the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, Division Chair-Elect and Division Chair, being the first African-American in the latter. Odom was also Executive Board Chair for the Collaboration for Industry and Educators Conference (CIEC).  He was the recipient of the Divisions highest honor, the Borman Award.  Mr. Odom has also received honors for his presentations and moderating and continues to strive for excellence.

Mr. Odom is very civic-minded and has given his time and service to various community organizations, churches, Habitat for Humanity and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
