|
Dr. Arlene P. Maclin received her BS degree cum laude in Engineering Physics from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, her MS degree in theoretical nuclear physics from the University of Virginia and her PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from Howard University. She was the first African American woman to receive a PhD. degree from Howard University and only the third African American woman to receive a PhD degree in physics in the nation. Her academic service includes more than 10 years of teaching at the levels of associate and full professors with ad-ministrative experience at the level of an Associate Dean of a College of Arts and Science, and a Director of Research. She has also served as the Director of several major research grants in excess of $10M. She is currently Professor of Optical Engineering at Norfolk State University, where she is developing undergraduate and graduate programs in optical engineering and electronics engineering. She has developed numerous science education programs for K-20 students. Further, she has extensive experience and accomplishments as a program manager in the management and development of new technologies for military and space systems, information technology, strategic planning, evaluation and proposal development. Her research has been in the areas of computa-tional modeling of III-V semiconductor materials, magneto-optical materials and band-structure calculations of high temperature aluminides. Her current research interests are in modeling nanostructures that may have potential applications in optical and electronic systems. She was named an outstanding mentor and recruiter by the Dean of the School of Science and Technology at Norfolk State University in 2003. Dr. Maclin joined the Department of Engineering as a full professor in Fall 2002. She has devloped a wonderful new addition to the School of Science and Technology, with her lastest project; The Center for Academic Excellence, that is housed in the Robinson Technology Buildings first floor.

Dr. Maclin is interested in modeling and simulating the behaviors of nanostructures us-ing well-defined techniques such as Density Functional Theory (DFT) and other compu-tational techniques to determine how nanostructures may be used to replace many current electrical and optical systems. She is interested in developing innovative pedagogies de-signed to improve retention, progression and graduation of underrepresented minority students in science, engineering, technology and mathematics (STEM). Further, she is dedicated towards developing well-defined research bridges and partnerships for STEM students to earn advanced degrees in STEM areas.
