Research Interest

My research interests have varied over the years. Early interests included an examination of the effects of communication disability on educational and vocational achievements. I also examined non-biologic social and behavioral factors that influence health outcomes in culturally and linguistically diverse populations, with health disparity implications. I examined communication performance variations in minority and non-minority populations, focusing on vocal variability with implications for social discrimination. My most recent interest is in examining the balance and mobility performance of aging African Americans, with steps toward improving their health outcomes through mobility and fitness training.

I serve as the Coordinator of the Nursing and Allied Health Department's Communication Sciences and Disorders Program, and Director of the University's Hearing, Speech, Language, and Literacy Center. I have over 35 years of professional experience in the fields of audiology and speech-language pathology. I teach courses in speech and voice science, hearing science, aural rehabilitation, rehabilitation theory and practice, African American Health and public speaking. Additionally, I have been funded over the years to conduct research in the areas of voice acoustics, speech and hearing sciences, minority health, and health and fitness.
