Tutorial Services -- Become an SI Leader
Applying for the Position of Tutor or SI Leader Tutors/SI leaders reinforce their own knowledge, enhance their ability to
communicate, and relate to people to provide students with academic assistance.
Becoming a tutor/SI leader at Norfolk State University involves a very selective
process that includes:
- High academic achievement
- A willingness to serve others
- Superior command of subject matter

Applicants must:
Applying for the Position of Tutor or SI Leader
- Have a grade point average of 3.0 or better
- Have completed the course with a 3.0 or better
- Submit an application
- Submit a Professor Recommendation Form or a reference letter from a
professor that instructs the course
Once eligibility has been confirmed:
- Tutors/SI leader must sign contract
- SI leaders must attend at least ten (10) hours of SI training that
consists of learning theory, study strategies, and skill development.
Training sessions are mandatory and results in national certification from
the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)
- Tutors must attend a training session that consists of learning theory,
study strategies, and skill development

ACCESS Tutor Certification
The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certifies the ACCESS
tutorial programs and gives authorization for the university to issue individual
CRLA tutoring certificates. The CRLA is a group of student-oriented
professionals active in the fields of reading, learning, assistance, development
education, and tutorial services at the college and adult level. CRLA sponsors
the International Tutor Certification Program (ITCP), which certifies skills and
training a tutor needs to be successful.
Certification provides:
- Recognition and positive reinforcement for NSU SI leaders
- Training and experience on a resume for SI leaders
- A certification process that set standards of skills and training for
the NSU tutorial programs
- A forum for the interchange of ideas and methods to improve student
learning and the professional growth of NSU students
It is important for all tutors to attend the multiple scheduled workshops.
All workshops will concentrate on particular strategies. Workshop attendance is
MANDATORY; however, additional sessions will be scheduled based on need
and availability.
Although faculty members screen SI leaders for content competency and approve
selection, certification is a tool used to insure quality to an effective peer
assistance program.
