Mission of the Program

The ACCESS Summer Bridge Program is a multi-faceted comprehensive program designed to facilitate and improve student success, retention and graduation rates of possible at-risk students who have been admitted to the University for the upcoming fall semester.  Emphasis is on intrusive academic advising, which involves selecting specific courses, strengthening basic skills, reinforcing classroom instruction, and enhancing overall student academic, personal, social and career development.

 Summer Bridge Brochure

The Norfolk State University (NSU) ACCESS Summer Bridge Program is a four-week, non-residential program that allows select first-time freshmen students to experience the NSU environment prior to entering the fall term.  The Office of First Year Experience and Academy for Collegiate Excellence and Student Success (ACCESS) are responsible for administering the program.  On campus accommodations for students are available upon request and at the individuals’ expense.  The ACCESS Summer Bridge Program provides tuition and textbooks to the selected participants. The program will run from June -July 22, 2012.

The students invited to participate in the ACCESS  Summer Bridge Program have been admitted to the University for the upcoming fall semester, and would benefit from academic strengthening in the areas of English, Math, or Computer Literacy.  Success in learning the content of these courses is a prerequisite for success in core courses at the University level.

The ACCESS students will bridge the gap between high school and college through academic coursework and the opportunity to build relationships and network with students, faculty and staff.  All students will take two of the four courses available from the following list of courses:

  • ENG 100D- Introduction to College Communications (Writing)
  • ENG 101- Communication Skills
  • MTH 101- Elementary Algebra
  • CSC 150- Computer Literacy

In addition, all program participants are required to attend academic skills seminars and study sessions.

The ACCESS program advisors will monitor the academic progress of Summer Bridge students until university and department requirements are satisfied for graduation.

The following Academic Skills Seminars will be presented to the ACCESS  students:

  • Developing Good Study Habits
  • Rules & Regulations
  • Note Taking Techniques
  • Test Taking Techniques
  • Time Management
