ACCESS Plus Summer Bridge Program

The Norfolk State University ACCESS Plus Summer Bridge Program operated this summer from June 23 – July 18, 2008.  It is designed to help first-time entering college students enhance basic skills and make a smooth transition into college life.  The Office of First Year Experience and Academy for Collegiate Excellence and Student Success (ACCESS) were responsible for administering the program.  On campus accommodations for students were available upon request and at the individuals’ expense.  This program accommodated 50 participants and full tuition was paid for the first 50 applicants.  The ACCESS Summer Bridge Program has been in operation since summer, 2000.

The students invited to participate in the ACCESS Plus Summer Bridge Program were admitted to the university for the fall 2008 semester, and required academic strengthening in the areas of English, Math, or Computer Literacy.  Success in learning the content of these courses is a prerequisite for success in core courses at the university level.

The ACCESS Plus students participated in an intense four-week summer program.  All students took two of the four courses available from the following list of courses:

  • ENG 100D- Introduction to College Communications (Writing)
  • ENG 101- Communication Skills
  • MTH 101- Elementary Algebra
  • CSC 150- Computer Literacy

In addition, all program participants were required to attend student development seminars and study sessions.

  • Developing Good Study Habits
  • Rules & Regulations
  • Note Taking Techniques
