ACCESS

 Advising Tools

Early intervention has been found to be one of the most effective strategies in preventing students from falling into academic jeopardy. This is based on the premise that if a student is assisted in time, directed to academic support services, and mentored by an advisor, the student can begin to have the right behavior or attitude, which should lead to positive performance and success.

When we are sufficiently interested in the academic progress of our students, it contributes to their success. Intrusive academic advising will reveal some information about a student/advisee to his/her advisor.

The Academic Intervention Measures (AIM) form is to be used throughout the academic year and for as many times as you have a need to refer a student to ACCESS. Students are to be referred to ACCESS if any of the following situations prevail:

  • Student is frequently tardy to class
  • Student has been absent 3 or more times
  • Student has not been submitting assignments
  • Student has not been actively participating in class or appears to be uninterested
  • Student has received a 'D' or 'F' grade at mid-semester report
  • Student is on academic probation and has shown no signs of improvement
  • Student shows some unusual behavior or attitude

Supplies of forms are available in each department office. Additional forms are available online or in the ACCESS office. For more information on AIM forms, please contact the ACCESS office at (757) 823-8507.

The CSI is administered to all first-time freshmen during each student orientation session. CSI information allows ACCESS professional academic advisors to focus on areas such as Dropout Proneness, Predicted Academic Difficulty, Educational Stress and the Receptivity to Institutional Help.

Results of the CSI are shared with each student by professional advisors during the beginning of each semester. Faculty academic advisors are encouraged to call the ACCESS department if they have questions concerning the anticipated academic success of an incoming student.

For more information on the College Student Inventory contact the ACCESS office at (757) 823-8507.

The College Student Inventory (CSI)

The College Student Inventory (CSI) is designed especially for incoming freshman and is comprised of 100 or 194 items contained in 19 different scales. The scales are organized into five main categories of:

Academic Motivation
  • Study Habits
  • Intellectual Interest
  • Verbal Confidence
  • Math and Science Confidence
  • Desire to Finish College
  • Attitudes Toward Educators
Social Motivation
  • Self-Reliance
  • Sociability
  • Leadership
General Coping Skills
  • Ease of Transition
  • Family Emotional Support
  • Openness
  • Career Planning
  • Sense of Financial Security

Supplementary Scales

  • Initial Impression
  • Internal Validity

It also contains a number of single items reporting characteristics such as high school activities, admissions test scores, and family background. With information from this inventory, an advisor/counselor can know where to begin fruitful conversation with a student.
