Undeclared Students Brochure
Norfolk State University enrolls between 300 to 400 undeclared undergraduate
students each year. FYE/ACCESS offers a variety of services to assist
undeclared students and to help them with major career choices. FYE/ACCESS
is located in the James A. Bowser Building, Room 118. For more information
contact the ACCESS office at (757) 823-8507.
Academic Advising and Registration
The Office of First Year Experience and the Academy for Collegiate Excellence
(FYE/ACCESS) functions as a "School Based Advisement Center" for undergraduate
students who have not yet decided on a major. ACCESS professional advisors
provide academic advisement and all related services for students who have not
selected a major.
Advantages of the Undeclared Option
The Undeclared option at Norfolk State University provides students the
opportunity to establish educational and career goals, and explore various
careers and majors.
- You will meet with the Coordinator of Undeclared Student
Services who will personally assist you with career exploration and the career decision
making process.
- You will be allowed time to explore different career options and discuss
opportunities with department faculty in programs that interest you.
- You will work with specially trained academic advisor to
discuss career paths, and possible majors.
- You can take advantage of career counseling and various
career development resources.
- Provides a career development course (GST 180 - Career Exploration)
- You will be enrolled in GST 180 - Career Exploration, a three (3) hour course
that is specifically designed to help students explore careers and majors
and to assist in deciding on a major.

Services Available for Undeclared Students
Academic and other support services include:
- Academic Advising: personal one-on-one advising with the coordinator/advisor of
undeclared students and professional academic advisors
- Career Counseling: undeclared students at NSU can take advantage of career
counseling and numerous career development resources, which include:
- GST 180 - career exploration
- Computer assisted individual assessments
- Career planning software: DISCOVER, Electronic Career
Planner, Custom Resume Creator, Digital Career Portfolio, and Career
Explorer
- Supplemental Instruction
- College Student Inventory (CSI) - designed to assess
students dropout proneness
- Occupational reference resources, personality and career interest
inventories
- ACCESS Summer Bridge Program
- ACCESS Female and Male Mentoring Programs
