Norfolk State University is an urban institution located in the heart of a

Located in the Tidewater area, the city of Norfolk is surrounded by Virginia
Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Hampton, and Newport News -- all rich in culture,

A campus shuttle is available for your convenience. Signs are posted around
campus and buses arrive every 10 minutes.
Prospective students and parents are invited to participate in tours and
information sessions scheduled every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3 p.m. (10
a.m. during the summer). Group tours are scheduled by appointment throughout the
year.
Norfolk State University’s annual Open House, “First View”, is scheduled in

handled through the University’s Office of Parking and Transportation Services.

Norfolk State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees. Academic Programs
Each department has its own sequence requirements for the Bachelor of Arts
and/or Bachelor of Science degrees. To earn a bachelor's degree, a minimum of
120 semester hours of credit with a quality point average of at least 2.0 is
required.
The University operates on a semester basis with classes beginning in August
and January. The summer session begins in May. Day, evening and weekend
classes are offered both on and off campus. [Programs]
Extracurricular Activities
There are more than 80 student organization including special interest clubs,
honor societies, publication staff, professional societies, fraternities,
sorties, religious organizations, political clubs, drama groups, an orchestra,
marching band, jazz band, and a choir. [student

The University has a 1,000 watt student-run ratio station that broadcasts
programs to the Tidewater area. Film series, art exhibits, dances, recitals,

Housing
The residence halls are located on the east and west sides of campus.
Programs are designed to meet the needs of the residents and to make the
residence halls "learning centers." Programs are planned in areas of
recreation, personal and social growth and development, and academic support.
University housing is not available to married or graduate students.
Rooms are furnished with beds, closets, desks, and chairs. Due to the high
demand for University housing, a deposit and housing application are due prior
to May 1 for the fall semester and November 30 for the spring semester.
Housing is not guaranteed and is on a first come first services basis.

Financial Aid
Most Norfolk State University students receive financial aid through non-need
scholarships, need-based scholarships, low-interest and long-term loans, College
Work-Study awards, and part-time jobs. Applicants must file the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

More Than Just Your Ordinary Campus!
On the 134-acre campus of Norfolk State University, excitement is in the air!
Situated in an urban setting, the campus has 34 modern buildings, both beautiful
and utilitarian.
A multi-purpose performing arts center at NSU is a magnificent showpiece
located on the west side of campus. It bears the name of Virginia’s first-ever
elected African-American governor, L. Douglas Wilder. The two-story, 56,000
square foot edifice accommodates theatrical, musical, lecture and dance
productions within a concert theater environment. It also provides facilities
for seminars requiring large-scale presentations. [L.

The Lyman Beecher Brooks Library is fully automated. The automated system
facilitates the circulation of all library materials. The library has space for
2,000 readers and a book capacity of 500,000 volumes. The CD-ROM workstations,
located in the reference area, are used to access information on a wide variety
of subjects. The library also uses such automated systems as the Internet,
Compuserve, Dialog, and others to assist users with their research. A recent
addition to Lyman Beecher Brooks Library houses a museum, which displays African
art from 14 countries, representing 40 groups and cultures. [Lyman

Among the other facilities on campus are a television studio and radio
station, a life sciences building equipped with a cancer research lab, a
greenhouse, planetarium, lecture rooms and other laboratories; a materials
research wing with crystal growth, organic synthesis, laser spectroscopy, and
magnetic resonance equipment; a fine arts building for music and art equipped
with a recording studio and an art gallery; two off-campus teaching centers; a
health, physical education, and ROTC complex that seats up to 8,000 spectators
for athletic and military exhibitions; a 30,000 seat football stadium, and a
