First Time Students

New Applicants under Chapter 30 or 1606, Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB) for Active Duty Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP):

If you qualify for the Chapter 30 or 1606 educational benefit program and have never used it before, you will complete an original Application for VA Educational Benefits (VA Form 22-1990) at the NSU Veterans Affairs Office or the Department of Veterans Affairs website www.gibill.va.gov  . The student is also required to provide an admission acceptance letter. The required documents may be faxed or e-mailed to the Veterans Affairs Office at 757 823-8803 or veteransaffairs@nsu.edu  For additional requirements, see the Required Documents table below.



New Applicants under Chapter 35, Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program:

You will be required to submit an original application (VA Form 22-5490) and must supply the name, Social Security number, date of birth, and claim or service number of the veteran. If you have already established eligibility for Chapter 35, you must supply your claim number and/or a copy of your certificate of eligibility. The student is also required to provide an admission acceptance letter. For additional requirements, see the Required Documents table below.



New Applicants under Chapter 31, Vocational Rehabilitation:

The veteran vocational rehabilitation case manager determines eligibility for Chapter 31, Veterans Vocational Rehabilitation. Once Chapter 31 benefits have been approved, the school will be sent an authorization form (VA 22-1905) to complete. The NSU Student Financial Services office will be notified of your enrollment for billing purposes, and the bookstore will be notified that the student may purchase required books and supplies, and a handicap parking decal, if applicable. Continuing Students

Continued Enrollment:

It is the veteran’s responsibility to notify the Veterans Affairs Office concerning his/her continued enrollment by completing the NSU Veterans Enrollment Request Form and Veterans Responsibility Agreement Form each academic year. Failure to do so will cause the payment cycle to be broken. Certification may be made for past semesters up to one year. The student is also required to provide proof of registration in the form of the registration schedule print-out. Active Duty military students must also provide the tuition and fees printout. The required documents may be faxed or e-mailed to the Veterans Affairs Office at 757 823-8803 or veteransaffairs@nsu.edu

To continue receiving VMSDEP benefits, qualifying enrolled students must provide the attached Recertification Form to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.
