PBS NewsHour White House Correspondent Yamiche Alcindor to Speak at 2019 Spring Commencement Ceremony
Journalist Yamiche Alcindor, currently a White House Correspondent for the PBS NewsHour, will deliver the keynote address at Norfolk State University’s 2019 Spring Commencement Ceremony at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, at William “Dick” Price Stadium on campus where nearly 500 students are expected to earn their undergraduate or advanced degrees.
Alcindor, covers the White House and U.S. President Donald Trump for the PBS NewsHour, which airs on weeknights at 7 p.m. on the public television channel. While at PBS, Alcindor has directly questioned President Trump on several occasions and has traveled extensively to places like Belgium for the 2018 North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting, to Helsinki, Finland, as the president met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and to the border of the United States and Mexico to chronicle the impact of the administration’s family separation policy.
In addition to her duties at PBS, Alcindor also serves as a political contributor on NBC News and MSNBC. She regularly appears on programs such as Morning Joe, Andrea Mitchell Reports, Hardball with Chris Matthews and Meet the Press with Chuck Todd.
Prior to her full-time role in television, Alcindor was a national reporter for The New York Times, covering politics and social issues, and also worked as a reporter at USA Today. Alcindor has reported extensively on the intersection of race and politics. She’s covered the presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders, the legacy of former U.S. President Barack Obama as well as several high-profile police use-of-force incidents in urban communities across the country. Alcindor earned a master's degree in broadcast news and documentary filmmaking from New York University and a bachelor's in English, government and African American studies from Georgetown University. In 2013, she was named “Emerging Journalist of the Year” by the National Association of Black Journalists.
In addition to undergraduate students who will earn their college diplomas, Norfolk State University administrators will present more than 100 master’s degrees to graduate-level students and four doctoral degrees. Also during the ceremony, several Army ROTC students will take their oath of commissioned officers.
Commencement weekend activities will begin with the Senior Class Toast on Thursday, May 2, followed by the Distinguished Alumni awards celebration, Friday, May 3, and the 50th anniversary celebration for the Class of 1969. The Class of 1969 was the first to graduate from Norfolk State College, which became an independent institution of higher education on February 1, 1969.
