Thank you for your interest in The Norfolk State University Spirit/Mascot Program! Our main goal is to support and promote Norfolk State University and the NSU athletic teams. Cheerleaders/Mascot also plays an important role in the development of school spirit at a variety of sports, special campus and local community events. The NSU Spirit Squad, including the mascot, is a group of male and female NSU students.
In addition to performing at approximately 30 regularly scheduled contests, the spirit squad also travels to perform at selected away games and the MEAC Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. Tryouts are held in the spring during the month of April and is open to currently enrolled students. . Prior experience in cheerleading at the high school or college level is desired. Satisfactory academic progress and adherence to appropriate health standards are expected. Practice sessions and a schedule of performances are confirmed at the conclusion of tryouts.
The NSU Spirit Program is a student activity. As a student activity, it’s first and foremost responsibility to the student is to support and not to compromise the student’s academic career. Secondly, the program should aid in developing the student participant into a responsible, mature and independent adult. The ideal candidate will also possess an outstanding attitude and strive for optimum academic excellence. It is our pledge to NSU students, parents, the community and administration to continue to maintain a high quality of spirit leaders at Norfolk State University.
