NSU Search Update
Posted: 02/08/2019

Dear Norfolk State University Community:

We write to provide you with an update on the search for Norfolk State University’s seventh president.

Since our late-November update, the Presidential Search Committee has completed the Recruitment phase of the search process and is now well into the Evaluation phase.  We are very pleased that the opportunity to lead Norfolk State University attracted over 75 nominations and applications, allowing the Committee to talk with a diverse, experienced, and talented group of candidates with exceptional career accomplishments and credentials.  Our current focus is on developing a deep understanding of each candidate’s unique strengths and particular areas of distinctiveness, and how they might add leadership value for Norfolk State University at this point in its distinguished history.

The Committee continues to exercise extreme care with its interviewing and vetting of candidates, an important piece of which is rooted in the provision of utmost confidentiality.  We know that many of you would like us to provide much more specificity about the candidate pool—and while we would like to provide you with more detail—our very able search consultants, Greenwood/Asher & Associates, as well as higher education leaders near and far, have impressed upon us that presidential searches can only be effective if candidates are assured strict confidentiality.  We have also been warned that a breach of such confidentiality causes candidates to withdraw, both threatening the viability of the search and the integrity of the search process.

That said, we want to reassure you that you have entrusted this search to a diverse group of University citizens of great skill and integrity who are dedicated to only doing what is best for the University.  We have rich—and lively—discussions that represent a broad array of opinions often informed by the input that each Committee member has gleaned from last fall’s listening sessions.  It is also clear that, when the members speak, they do so with the voice of their constituents, to include their fellow students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members.

As for when we hope to conclude the search, we will not rush to a decision and, instead, will continue to work diligently on behalf of all who care so deeply about this University.  Indeed, Norfolk State University deserves nothing less from all of us.  We encourage you to visit the specially developed website for the search designed to keep the University’s multiple stakeholders “in the loop” of this important work.

NSU Search Update
Posted: 11/29/2018

Dear Norfolk State University Community:

We write to provide you with an update on the search for Norfolk State University’s seventh president.

On behalf of the Board of Visitors and the Presidential Search Committee, we extend our thanks to the hundreds of you who participated in the critically important second phase of the presidential search process.

The Presidential Search Committee met November 16 to review the feedback it received from the University’s multiple stakeholders through listening sessions held July 16-17, August 9-10, and September 28, as well as through responses submitted via the online survey and the general comments link.  That feedback helped to inform the presidential position description as posted on the website.  It will also help inform the candidate evaluation process.

We encourage you to visit the Public Input Section on the Presidential Search Website.  In it, you will find a summary of the feedback from both the listening sessions and surveys entitled “IN YOUR WORDS” and an audience analysis of the internal and external stakeholder groups who participated in the survey.

We will continue to keep you informed about the process as the Presidential Search Committee moves forward with the Recruitment and Evaluation phases.  The committee plans to keep the website links for recommendations or nominations open.  We will also continue to monitor and respond to comments and questions regarding the search process.

With warmest wishes for the holidays,

Deborah M. DiCroce
