Making Requests

The assigned Content Editor should send a request - following the Making Requests workflow to djones@nsu.edu.

  • Website Changes

    The Norfolk State University website at www.nsu.edu has assigned NSU Website Content Editors and Contributors who keep the content updated. These persons are assigned by the department heads, who are responsible for updating their websites by default.

  • Recommended Changes

    However, if you are not a website content editor or contributor, please email:  djones@nsu.eduwith recommended changes to:

    NSU Website Sitemap
    - Changes to the Contact Us page
    - Inconsistances or inaccuracies you see on the NSU Website at www.nsu.edu
    - Recommendations for links or content changes 

    Please follow the steps on the Making Requests web page.

  • Services Not Available

    These services are not offered:

    • Editing or posting files - .doc, .pdf, .xls, .ppt
    • Posting images - directly to the web page
    • Adding or Editing website content
    • Editing videos  - see: FORMS / Video-Audio for more information
    • Creation of or editing > Online forms or surveys > contact ITS
    • Creation of / Training: SharePoint > contact ITS

  • Website Questions

    Please send questions regarding the Norfolk State University website to djones@nsu.edu. 

    Questions: 

    • Archiving files with all listings live
    • Renaming or moving a website
    • Regarding permissions
    • Regarding the creation of an Extranet - a website sectioned out w/ membership to specific emails - non-NSU.
    • Anything related to the NSU Website with exception of the Design - which was outsourced to FuseIdeas.

     

Services Available

Below are some of the services available to departments to assist in the upkeep of their websites. The assigned Content Editor should send a request - following the Making Requests workflow to djones@nsu.edu.

  • Changes to Files

    Files

    - Convert .doc to fillable .pdf
    - Create a folder - folders are for placing files which require a shorter address
    - Create a short website address for a web file - file must be placed in a folder
    - Upload files to a folder - this has to be done one by one

  • Page Requests

    The amount and type of pages is limited by the NSU Website Guidelines. Please read these prior to submitting your request.

    To begin:  The assigned Content Editor should send a request - following the Making Requests workflow to djones@nsu.edu.

    Page Requests Available

    - Create a new page / folder  
    - Create a short website address for web page / web file
    - Request for copy of website analytics - your website statistics
    - Rename, Remove, Move, Merge web pages
    - Website Quality Insurance checks - spelling, broken links, content clean up

    Short website address: 

    Not all addresses may be given out. Some addresses would not be allowable in that other other departments have the same type of service or offering. 

     It is the responsibilty of the requestor to ensure the shortened link is linked corretly on your material (flyer, brochure, booklet) or webpage.  Click the link and ensure the address is going where you need it to go.  Always check your links. I am only able to create a short website address from www.nsu.edu. 

    New Pages

    New pages will be in a draft status, which is signified by a red circle with a white x.  These pages will not be displayed on the left navigation until they are live.

  • Photos

    Photos

    - Clean up photos - make them look better if possible
    - Crop faculty/staff photos for website Contact Us pages

    * Please be aware it is not possible to make small photos larger unless they are a 300 DPI (high resolution)

  • Troubleshooting

    Troubleshooting

    Please send me screenshots as well as information regarding the issue you are having.  Try to bullet out your steps and provide what you tried to remedy the issue. It is important that you give me time to try to figure out where the issue is and resolve it. Providing times and dates also assists me in going through the logs and looking for inconsistancies in the system.  If you see something acting differently than you feel it should - please also alert me.

  • Video / Audio

    Videos / Audio

    I am able to embed a YouTube video on your web page - if - you have it on YouTube and it has closed caption.  


    Making the Request​

    The assigned Content Editor should sends a request to me at djones@nsu.edu

    - Indicate what page you want the video embedded on - please provide the full website address
    - Indicate - where - on the page you want the video embedded - under this / above that
    - Indicate if you have an expiration date for the video
    - Send me the link to the video on YouTube 
    - Give me permission to "Go Live" - and publish the video


    Turn Around Time

    - The video will be reviewed
    - The closed captioning will be reviewed
    - Due to the video being placed in a widget, I need time to carve the widget out and place the rest of your content below the video - also in widgets


    Guidelines

    All videos either linked or embedded are required to be closed captioned or have a narrative linked to the video or audio.  See:  Section 508 of the Disability Act.

  • Widgets

    Widgets

    Request to have a blank widget added to your website.

    The assigned Content Editor should send a request - following the Making Requests workflow to djones@nsu.edu.

    - Once the widget has been created > it will have a red circle with a white x.  This indicates the widget is in a draft status.

    - Items in a draft status will not display on the left navigation until the file is live.
