Welcome to the Norfolk State University 75th Anniversary website. We invite you to visit the 75th Anniversary website often for news, special events, and other information related to this 18-month celebration. We also invite you to participate in all of the anniversary special events . . . each event designed to bring visitors to the campus so that you can see first-hand how special NSU really is.

Brief History

It may be hard to believe, but the little school that was founded in September 1935 as the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University is turning 75 years old. As far as institutions are concerned, Norfolk State University is still young, but reaching a 75th anniversary is a major milestone. We opened our doors in the old Brambleton Avenue YMCA with 87 students. Today, NSU has about 7,000 students and 53 buildings located on 134 beautiful acres. We graduate nearly 1,000 students each year and have a host of successful alumni who are leaders in their fields.

75th Anniversary Mission

Our mission during the 75th anniversary celebration is to engage the entire Norfolk State University community including, faculty, alumni, administration, staff, students, retirees, as well as elected officials and leaders in various professions throughout the Hampton Roads area in our eighteen-month long celebration. It’s a mission that we hope all of you will accept.

Goal

The goals of the 75th anniversary celebration and commemoration are to highlight the achievements of the University, to celebrate the growth and the success of Norfolk State University, and to bring the NSU community together in a series of events and initiatives that began in January 2010 through the end of the 2010-2011 academic year. These events will be a combination of academic conferences and lectures, alumni gatherings, athletic contests, performances and exhibitions, and student celebrations.
